Crock pot setting- auto shift? Somewhere along the line, I 'inherited' a Hamilton Beach/ Scovill 4-quart Crock Watcher, which has a removable crock, but no owner's manual. It has 4 settings, high, low, off, and 'auto shift'. Does anyone know what auto shift is? Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question!!

A slow cooker conveniently cooks food throughout the day while you attend to more important needs. The Crock Watcher slow cooker earns its name by cooking food in the “slow and low” method, which means that the base heats slowly and evenly to cradle the crockery and food in warmth. Before using your Procter Silex Crock Watcher, familiarize yourself with its components and instructions so your meal is flawless every time.

  1. Set the base on a stable surface, close to an outlet and about 6 inches away from items on all sides, especially cloth towels, food wrappers, gas stoves or stovetop heating elements.

  2. Place the stoneware inside the base; the stoneware fits easily into the heating base and removes easily for serving and cleaning.

  3. Layer the vegetables along the bottom of the crock, then layer the meat on top of the vegetables--making sure that the food does not touch the lid. Add enough liquid to bathe the vegetables and meat so they become fork-tender if you are making a soup or stew. Stir the stew ingredients, or add any necessary liquids to a meat or vegetable mixture, and fit the lid on top of the crock. Fill the stoneware about 1/2 to 3/4 full for optimum cooking.

  4. Plug in the Crock Watcher and refer to your recipe to determine the heat setting for your dish. Depending on the recipe, you may need to cook the food on the “High” temperature setting before reducing the temperature to “Low” to simmer. Keep the lid closed while the food cooks as its removal contributes to a delay of up to 30 minutes in cooking time. You do not need to stir or turn the food as it cooks.

  5. Add herbs and spices in the last 30 minutes of cooking to prevent their flavor from dissipating.

  6. Add milk or cream within the final 15 to 30 minutes of cooking so they don't separate in the heat.

  7. Add fish to the crock during the last 15 minutes of cooking as it cooks very quickly.

  8. Tip

Trim the fat from cuts of red meat or poultry and then brown the meat in a skillet or Dutch oven before adding it to the Crock Watcher. The browning process helps to seal in essential juices and to ensure that the meat cooks to the necessary internal temperature. Soften beans or legumes overnight in a pot filled with water or in a quick-cook stovetop method before adding them to the Crock Watcher. Cook pasta partially before adding it to the Crock Watcher. Incorporate long-grain rice, rather than the short grained variety, into your recipe as long-grain rice cooks more evenly and quickly. Do not immerse the base in water; it is safe to immerse the crock in soapy water or clean it in the dishwasher. As you lift the lid, stand away from the crock as steam escapes when the lid is lifted.

    Warning

If the power surges or goes out during the day, do not eat the food as your risk of food poisoning increases. The Crock Watcher crock becomes very hot throughout the cooking process; only touch it while wearing an oven mitt or holding a pot holder. Do not turn on the appliance until all of the food is added, and do not cook on the crock’s “Keep Warm” setting, particularly if you are cooking meat.
