Karcher pressure washer problems
Saturday 20th February 2016
I have a K2 thats only been used twice. I bought it to jet my deck a couple of years ago, then i got it out last weekend to do it again. I used it for about an hour with no issues.
This weekend i wanted to do my paths, and it has hardly any flow. I have plenty of flow to the unit, but its just a trickle out. Its honestly coming out at about the same flow rate as pee!
It will build up pressure in the hose, but as soon as you pull the trigger it drops to nothing as there is no flow
I've taken the lance off and its the same from the unit alone.
Anyone had similar, and what was the fix?

does it sound like it has power ??
can you hear the pump kick in when you pull the trigger ??
I once spent 10 minutes checking fuses, water pressure etc ..only to find i'd knocked the knob to off

Is the lance head adjustable to reduce flow? simple to check incase someone has turned it down

I know it's stating the obvious but is there a kink in your hose?

Yes the pump runs and cut out once its up to pressure. When you pull the trigger the is a tiny flow, and the pump runs again.

Even with the lance disconnected so its just the outlet fitting, the flow is very very low. Its way less than the available flow and pressure in.

Has it been outside in the cold?
Without fail, my Mum leaves hers in the garage all winter and it freezes, and the pump dies.

I got a Karcher as a wedding present (yeah seriously) about 20-odd years ago and it lived outside in all weathers and served me well but I got fed up lugging it from the front of the house the back.
2 years ago I bought one of the newer K4 ones and the pump failed (don't think you are supposed to leave the new ones outside in winter and you have to make sure you keep the trigger squeezed to get all the water out of it after switching it off) but to be fair to Karcher they repaired it under warranty. Same thing happened to it this year (stored under a blanket in the shed over winter) and to be fair to Karcher they are currently repairing it under warranty. Meanwhile, the 20 year old one still works. That's progress.

I've already tried google and its not a lack of pressure, its a lack of flow. With the trigger off it will pressurise, and will hold the pressure. Any article I've read seems to be about the pump unable to get pressure, or pulsing because its losing the pressure.

This may be the root of the problem I used it last weekend, and there were a couple of sub-zero nights during the week.
Karcher K4 Basic
It seems strange that the flow out isn't even matching the supply hose flow though.

Stuck bypass valve????
when the pressure washer pump is on and the lance trigger is operated , pressurised water flows. When the trigger is released - to prevent over pressure on the hose and the pump overloading a pressure release valve opens and the pump output is passed around to the input of the pump. (and in some systems the pump turns off)
If this little valve sticks when you pull the trigger, the pump runs but because the valve is stuck open the pressure never builds because its bleeding off around to the pump input , therefore you get the all the right noises but only a trickle of water out of the lance.
Look for a brass bolt on the body of the pump, near to the lance connection, behind which there is a spring and a plunger. Remove the plunger and spring, lube with silicon gel and replace.

K2's are not very good and the couple I had lasted only a few months. The K4 kept in my Garage is a heavier duty monster and is about two years old now. I would take it back and get a better Karcher or a Nilfisk.

Check the garden hose fitting that clicks onto the pressure washer. I found mine was restricting the flow to the point that the T-Racer wouldn't spin.
Replaced the coupling and all is well.

I get loads of flow from the hose, just nothing out of the washer. Even with the pump running its way less than the hose on its own (probably 10% at best)

I doubt I'll ever buy another karcher. Its had about 3 hours use in its life. It was bought to replace a cheap one i bought for £25-30 from B&Q. That one lasted about 5 years and was sold on still working. I thought I was buying a quality product!

The karcher shuts down and keeps the line pressurised so I don't think it has a bypass. I'll strip it down next weekend though, so I'll see then.

Karcher units are just plastic rubbish now, wouldn't buy another as they all tend to fail within 2 years.
As F12MAD has said, the pressure relief valve is probably stuck on the OP's unit.
I have a Halfords 2000 unit which is going on for 10 years old, used 3 or 4 times a week. I have modified the inlet valve from plastic to brass and use it with a Karcher lance, (the lances are so much better than the main units). The Halfords unit has a metal alloy pump and is much more robust than modern plastic ones.
Paid less than £50 for it too which makes it a great purchase.

I had a Drain Cleaner I wanted to keep that fits the Karcher otherwise a Nilfisk would have been my choice. The K4 is a better unit. It has metal parts where the K2 is plastic. I used to have a Halfords one but getting hoses and connectors was at the time a nightmare. Seems that there are more out there now.
